After Tooth Extraction
After a tooth extraction, it is important for a blood clot to form in order to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. To assist with this, bite firmly on a gauze pad provided by us for 30–45 minutes immediately following your appointment. If bleeding or oozing persists, place a new gauze pad and continue biting firmly for another 30 minutes. This process may need to be repeated several times.
Once the blood clot has formed, it is essential not to disturb or dislodge it. The clot plays a critical role in healing. For the first 72 hours, avoid rinsing vigorously, drinking through straws, smoking, consuming alcohol, or brushing the teeth adjacent to the extraction site. These actions can dislodge or dissolve the clot and delay healing. In addition, avoid vigorous exercise for 24 hours, as increased blood pressure may cause renewed bleeding at the extraction site.
Some discomfort and swelling are normal after an extraction. Applying an ice pack—or a sealed bag of frozen peas or corn—to the area will help minimize swelling. The swelling typically subsides within 48 hours. Take prescribed pain medications as directed, and call our office at Smile Professionals Dentistry Phone Number (714) 771-2600 if the medication does not provide adequate relief. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them as directed for the full course, even if symptoms improve. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids and consume soft, nutritious foods on the day of the extraction. You may return to a normal diet as soon as you are comfortable.
Normal oral hygiene should be resumed 24 hours after your extraction. Brushing and flossing daily will help speed healing and keep your mouth fresh and clean.
Recovery is typically quick. Within a few days, you should feel well enough to return to your normal activities. However, if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, swelling lasting beyond 2–3 days, or any adverse reaction to medication, please contact our office immediately at Smile Professionals Dentistry Phone Number (714) 771-2600.
